Two autonomous ice resurfacing machines are now operating at PSD BANK DOME in Düsseldorf/Germany, using advanced technology to deliver even more precise and efficient ice maintenance.
“The system continuously analyzes resource consumption, creating the basis for efficient deployment planning. Through targeted operation, ice quality is maintained at a consistently high level. With D.LIVE, we have a strong innovation partner with whom we are actively shaping the future of ice resurfacing,” says Mirko Sparber, Sales & Marketing Director / CCO / Head ice unit, WM technics.
The introduction of autonomous technology also marks an important milestone in view of upcoming major events: “The new ice machines are a key component in the preparations for the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship 2027. With two autonomous ice resurfacing machines, PSD BANK DOME is currently the only venue worldwide equipped in this way. We are consistently taking the next step towards greater efficiency and the sustainable operation of modern ice surfaces. Our special thanks go to WM technics for the collaborative partnership and the implementation of this forward-looking project,” says Kim Lachmann, CFO D.LIVE.
The innovative system developed by WM technics largely automates ice maintenance and ensures consistently high ice quality. The ice is maintained independently, and the ice thickness is automatically kept within the optimal range, hence, not only guaranteeing a perfect ice surface but also significantly improving energy efficiency, as ice thickness directly impacts energy consumption—each additional centimeter increases cooling demand by up to 6%.
If required, the ice master can intervene at any time via a central control app and make individual adjustments. Continuous monitoring and control of all machine functions also enable predictive maintenance and resource-efficient operation.
